SPC Flooring Thickness: Why 5mm Makes Sense

by Admin on Aug 02, 2026
SPC Flooring Thickness: Why 5mm Makes Sense - Vivid Floors

A floor can look perfect in a sample and still be wrong for the room if its construction does not suit the space. SPC flooring thickness is one of the details worth checking before you choose a colour, plank format or fitting date. It influences how solid the floor feels, how it handles everyday movement, whether doors and thresholds will need adjustment, and how easily it works with the existing subfloor.

For many homes, 5mm SPC flooring offers the balance people are looking for: a substantial rigid-core floor with a refined finished height. It is designed for real household life - from breakfast spills and wet coats in the hallway to pets, children and the constant footfall of an open-plan kitchen.

What does SPC flooring thickness mean?

SPC stands for stone plastic composite. Beneath the decorative oak-effect surface sits a dense, rigid core made with mineral content and stabilising materials. This core gives SPC click flooring its strength, dimensional stability and resistance to movement compared with softer vinyl products.

When comparing thickness, look at the total product thickness rather than assuming a bigger number always means a better floor. A 5mm plank, for example, combines the visible design layer, protective wear layer, rigid SPC core and any integrated backing into a carefully engineered construction. Each layer has a job to do.

The decorative layer creates the character of the floor, whether you prefer the calm grain of White Oak, the warmth of Nut Oak or a more rustic Farmhouse Oak look. The wear layer protects that design from day-to-day scuffs and stains. The core helps the plank remain stable, while an attached underlay, where included, can add comfort and help reduce room-to-room sound.

Thickness is therefore useful, but it is not a stand-alone measure of quality. The wear layer, click system, surface finish, backing and warranty all deserve equal attention.

Why 5mm SPC flooring thickness is a strong choice

A 5mm SPC floor sits in a practical sweet spot for modern renovations. It feels more substantial than very thin click vinyl, yet it does not create the high floor build-up associated with some other flooring types. That matters when you are keeping an eye on door clearances, skirting, kitchen plinths and transitions into adjoining rooms.

The rigid core at this thickness provides a stable base beneath the plank. Once properly installed over a suitable, level subfloor, the result is a reassuringly firm floor underfoot. It is a particularly sensible choice for living rooms, kitchens, hallways, bedrooms and dining spaces where the floor needs to look considered while coping with ordinary wear.

For design-led homes, 5mm also works well because it supports a premium finish without making installation needlessly complicated. Wide oak-effect planks can create an open, contemporary feel, while herringbone brings a more tailored look to hallways, lounges and home offices. The finished floor remains slim enough to integrate neatly with the rest of the property.

Vivid Floors focuses on 5mm luxury rigid-core construction for this reason. It delivers the durability expected from SPC while keeping the installation profile practical for UK homes.

Comfort is about more than the number on the label

It is reasonable to expect a thicker floor to feel more comfortable, but comfort depends on the whole construction. SPC is intentionally rigid, so it will not have the soft feel of carpet or a deeply cushioned vinyl. Its appeal lies in a stable, supportive walking surface that is easier to live with than natural wood in busy areas.

An integrated underlay can make a noticeable difference to the feel and sound of the floor, particularly upstairs or in larger open-plan rooms. It also saves the extra step of choosing and laying a separate underlay, provided the product and installation conditions allow for it. Avoid doubling up underlays unless the manufacturer specifically permits it, as excess cushioning can affect click-joint performance.

Stability for changing household conditions

Homes are not static environments. Central heating comes on, sunlight reaches one side of a room and temperatures change through the seasons. A quality rigid SPC core is designed to remain more stable through those normal changes than many traditional flooring materials.

That does not mean preparation can be skipped. Every floating floor needs an expansion gap around the perimeter and at fixed objects so it has room to respond naturally. A floor fitted too tightly against walls, kitchen units or pipes may have problems regardless of how thick it is.

Thickness versus wear layer: know the difference

One common mistake is to compare only total plank thickness. For a floor that will see dogs, dining chairs, prams or frequent shoes at the door, the wear layer is just as relevant as the core beneath it.

The wear layer is the transparent protective coating above the printed timber design. A good wear layer helps guard against scratches, stains and surface wear, keeping the oak-effect finish looking fresher for longer. It is especially relevant in hallways, kitchens, rental properties and light commercial settings where traffic is higher.

A thicker plank with a weak surface is not automatically a better buy than a well-made 5mm SPC plank with a durable wear layer and credible warranty. Look at the full specification, not one headline figure. Textured finishes, such as Embossed in Register technology, can also add to the realism by following the grain pattern printed beneath, creating a more convincing wood appearance under hand and foot.

Will 5mm work with your existing floor levels?

In many refurbishment projects, this is where 5mm proves its value. The finished height is often manageable when installing over a correctly prepared existing surface, helping reduce the chance of awkward steps between rooms. You may still need suitable trims at doorways and transitions, but the difference is generally easier to accommodate than with a much thicker floor covering.

Before ordering, measure beneath internal doors, check the clearance beneath appliances and consider how the new floor will meet tiles, carpet or an entrance mat. A small height difference can affect the details that make a completed room look polished.

Do not use thickness as a shortcut for covering a poor subfloor. SPC is rigid, but it will follow significant dips, ridges and imperfections below it. Uneven areas can lead to movement underfoot, stress on the click joints and an unsatisfactory finish. The subfloor should be clean, dry, sound and level in line with the fitting guidance before installation begins.

Is thicker always better for SPC flooring?

Not necessarily. A thicker product can be appropriate where a project needs a particular acoustic backing, a higher build-up to meet an adjoining floor or a more specialised specification. However, extra thickness may also mean more work around doors, thresholds and fitted furniture. It can add cost without solving the issue you actually have.

For a straightforward residential renovation, a premium 5mm SPC floor is often the more considered option. It gives you a durable waterproof surface, a stable rigid core and a practical click-fit profile without overwhelming the room’s existing details.

The room should guide the decision. In a ground-floor kitchen, prioritise waterproof performance, surface durability and a level base. In a bedroom, comfort and appearance may carry more weight. In a hallway, choose a finish and wear specification ready for muddy shoes, bags and repeated traffic. For a light commercial project, check that the stated warranty and product rating match the expected use.

Installation details that protect performance

The best flooring construction still relies on careful fitting. Allow the unopened packs to acclimatise as directed, inspect planks in good light before fitting and mix boards from different packs for a natural variation in tone. Plan the layout before clicking the first row together, especially with herringbone, where the pattern needs to be balanced from the start.

Use a compatible underlay only where one is required and approved. If the floor includes an integrated underlay, this is already part of its stated thickness and construction. Follow the product guidance for moisture protection over mineral subfloors, and check suitability if you are installing over underfloor heating. The system must be operated within the flooring manufacturer’s temperature limits.

Once fitted, SPC is refreshingly easy to maintain. Regular sweeping or vacuuming with a hard-floor setting removes grit that could mark the surface. Wipe spills promptly and clean with a damp mop and an appropriate non-abrasive cleaner. Avoid soaking the floor, steam cleaning unless specifically approved, or using harsh products that can leave a residue.

A well-chosen thickness should make the finished floor feel right in the room, not become another compromise to manage. Order samples, place them beside your existing finishes and measure the practical details before you commit. When the colour, texture, construction and floor height all work together, a 5mm SPC floor can give your home the warmth of timber styling with the confidence needed for modern living.
